The Story of Stuff

The Story of Stuff has been online for a little while, but I’m a little slow sometimes in catching up to everything interweb.  The whole movie is about 20 minutes long and gives a “fast-paced, fact-filled look at the underside of our production and consumption patterns”.

The three teasers are below.  Good food for thought.

Oh Vivian, you’re such a hippie.
Now Rebecca is off watching all the videos on that website. Before you know it, we won’t be collecting plastic junk anymore. And then what?

Ha! Both Eric and I realize that we’re probably next-gen hippies. We’re so “peace, love and recycling”.

“The Story of Stuff” is a good little video. I’ve actually been asked if it was a good thing to have on our blog since we are technically a “producer of stuff”. And actually, as a ‘product designer’, it’s hard to reconcile ‘not wanting more stuff’ and ‘designing new stuff’.

So the best answer is choose carefully the stuff of your life. Choose stuff that will last and isn’t a passing fancy or fashion. Choose stuff that considers a “cradle-to-cradle” use cycle. Choose future heirlooms and not future throw-outs.

From the “Blend” perspective, we try and design “new classics”. Pieces that will last, despite what the current fashion trends are; that are made from recycled or recyclable materials and that don’t contribute to the “stuff” problem. We certainly don’t produce much more than we actually sell.

From the personal perspective, we just do what we can, and I suppose that’s all that anyone can do.
