Inspiration | Charmer-inspired jack-o-lanterns?

Wednesday, October 27th, 2010

When we originally designed our Oog series of Charmer necklaces, we wanted something fun.  It was just a coincidence that they happened to be a little spooky too:

If you haven’t yet carved your pumpkin yet for Hallowe’en, here are three free jack-o-lantern templates you can use:

To use the templates:

1) Click on the template you’d like to use, and you’ll be taken to a full-size version.

2) Right-click the full-size template and “Save image as”, to save the template to your computer

3) Print out your image in landscape orientation with your printer, or re-scale as necessary.

4) Tape or pin the template to your pumpkin. You can use a pin to mark the outlines and then connect the dots of the outline.  (You’ll be cutting out the grey areas of the template).

Enjoy! If you use any of these templates, we’d love to see photos of the complete jack-o-lanterns!

Update: Here are some photos of completed jack-o-lanterns, thanks to my friend Shannon!

Inspiration | A look back at our “Flower Lace” necklace

Monday, October 25th, 2010

I’m working on a custom ‘skin’ design for our phone, since a black phone on a black desk is often hard to find without having to call said phone. I thought it’d be fun to do the same pattern that we use for our Flower Lace necklaces, since it’s one of my favorites of everything we’ve ever designed:

In looking through my working files for this design, I came across this bookmarked blog posting by Oh Joy! with the original inspiration for the pattern:

Oh Joy! had blogged about NY Fashion Week in September 2007 and the Lela Rose‘s Spring 2008 collection.  It’s been 3 years, and I still love that dress and our engraved wood necklace that was inspired by it.

Mention | Interview about giving back with Metal for Monsters

Friday, October 15th, 2010

Vivian had to good fortune to talk to Kelly Alexander about Blend Creations’ Metal for Monsters project. With each Metal for Monsters pendant sold, we donate $16 to international children’s charity, UNICEF.

The idea to start Metal for Monsters came one Saturday morning, while reading the paper. We were moved by a story about children in other parts of the world who, for whatever reason, lack basic needs such as food, shelter, water and an education.

While we realize how lucky we are, as relatively new parents, we couldn’t imagine having a child facing such harsh realities. We thought about what we could do to give back to the other little monsters of the world, and Metal for Monsters was born.  We’re hoping to raise at least $10,000 for UNICEF as a way of giving back and hopefully give more kids a chance to be the best little monsters they can be.

Behind the scenes | Work in progress

Tuesday, October 12th, 2010

I’m working on some new engraved wood inlays.  I love doing these because the process is satisfying and almost instantly gratifying.  The time it takes from a sketch or an idea to a finished prototype could happen in a day if inspired enough.

Every contemporary jewelry piece at Blend Creations starts as an idea. Sometimes we actually sketch things on paper:

Many times we skip the pencil to paper stage and go right to the digital version which looks (slightly) more refined.  The advantage of working digitally is that instead of an eraser and sketchy pencil marks, there is ‘Undo’, ‘Copy’ and ‘Paste’ which allows for easy re-iteration and multiple versions until the final drawing that feels right is made:

The biggest advantage is that a digital vector file is needed to engrave the image into wood, so if you have a final vector drawing, you also have your final production file, which gives you this:

(As you can see, we’re also testing out a ‘Tree of Life’ engraved wood inlay.  We originally created this tree for the wedding invitations of some dear friends of ours who got married in an arboretum.)

Gift ideas | Bridesmaid jewelry gifts for a fall wedding

Thursday, October 7th, 2010

One of our favorite jewelry gift ideas for bridesmaids of a fall wedding are contemporary jewelry pieces that directly tie in with the theme of the wedding.  Shown above are wedding invitations that incorporate the same washi (paper) that is used as inlay for the necklace, pendants and earrings.

Even if your bridesmaids have different necklines or style of dresses, they can still have the same washi inlay, but in different shapes so they can look co-ordinated with jewelry that compliments their frame and dresses.

Giveaway | Winner for September’s giveaway

Friday, October 1st, 2010

September was a big month for us, since it was the month that we started Blend Creations and this year we celebrated 5 years in business.  Over on Facebook, we reached 800 fans yesterday, and to celebrate that, we just gave away five $50 gift vouchers for Blend Creations.

But enough about that, with our monthly giveaway, up for grabs was one of our latest designs, an ‘Oog’ Charmer necklace.

There was an overwhelming response with 113 blog comments, 71 Facebook wall posts and 32 Tweets, for a total of 216 entries!

With a little help from the Random.org number generator, 53 corresponded with Robin Barton’s Facebook wall post that wished us a Happy 5th birthday. Congratulations Robin!

If you didn’t win this month, just wait, since we’ll be announcing the October giveaway early next week :)
