Behind the scenes | Studio clean-up and sale coming soon!

Monday, March 4th, 2013

We’ve been busy doing a bit of an overdue clean-up in our studio. In one corner of the studio lives our sample shelf, which, over the past 7.5 years has grown to include over 60 different pieces of jewelry that were used for photography samples, prototypes, returns and discontinued products.

After showing some sneak peeks over on our Facebook page, we’ve decided we’ll be having some form of online sale to help clean up our studio a bit. Make sure to follow us on Facebook, or subscribe to our newsletter to stay updated on when and where we’ll be selling our treasure trove of samples!

Behind the scenes | How to make a laser-engraved wood inlay

Friday, November 9th, 2012

Here’s another peek of what we do behind the scenes. We’ve fired our laser up this time to engrave and cut some wood for one of our wood inlay necklaces.

Behind the scenes | How to make a QR code pendant

Thursday, November 1st, 2012

Over on our Facebook page, we’ve had a few friends ask to see more of what goes on behind the scenes. So, camera in hand, we filmed this short little clip of how we make a QR code pendant. (Hint: It involves frickin’ lasers!)

So have a peek! There’s even a little trivia about how old our tech is. And to clarify, I didn’t go to design school 17 years ago, I just inherited an old Pentium III (?) when I started. Also, the voice-over masks just how LOUD the laser, fan and compressor are.

Hope you enjoy! Hit the comments if there’s something else you’d like us to show.

Sneak peek | Fun with felt: Custom ornament prototype

Thursday, February 9th, 2012

Around the holidays, we made some special Christmas gifts — they were ornaments based on our child’s drawings (our 5 year old Jr. VP!).

We had a few requests to have custom ornaments available in the future and while it’s no longer the season, these things take time and we’ve put our thinking caps on! Behold, a first prototype in 100% wool felt, in a beautifully vibrant shade of red:

As fun as they were in acrylic, the ornaments are spindly which could lead to the little limbs snapping off, and frankly, it smells horrible to laser cut plastic. (Not to worry, our laser has a carbon filter, but it certainly does not smell like roses or anything good for you).

Wool felt on the other hand is quite pliable and doesn’t smell any worse than a hair dryer. We’ve washed the final product and there’s actually no residual odor.

So we’ve got our thinking caps on and will be experimenting with designs for some trivets and other household goods aside from the ornaments. What do you think?

Behind the scenes | Work in progress

Tuesday, October 12th, 2010

I’m working on some new engraved wood inlays.  I love doing these because the process is satisfying and almost instantly gratifying.  The time it takes from a sketch or an idea to a finished prototype could happen in a day if inspired enough.

Every contemporary jewelry piece at Blend Creations starts as an idea. Sometimes we actually sketch things on paper:

Many times we skip the pencil to paper stage and go right to the digital version which looks (slightly) more refined.  The advantage of working digitally is that instead of an eraser and sketchy pencil marks, there is ‘Undo’, ‘Copy’ and ‘Paste’ which allows for easy re-iteration and multiple versions until the final drawing that feels right is made:

The biggest advantage is that a digital vector file is needed to engrave the image into wood, so if you have a final vector drawing, you also have your final production file, which gives you this:

(As you can see, we’re also testing out a ‘Tree of Life’ engraved wood inlay.  We originally created this tree for the wedding invitations of some dear friends of ours who got married in an arboretum.)

Behind the scenes | Blend Creations is 5 years old!

Thursday, September 2nd, 2010

Blend Creations is our first-born, our pet project, our livelihood and a manifestation of our creativity — and it’s turning 5 this month!

We thought it would be fun to show a few of the ways we’ve changed in the last 5 years.

Employees

Then:
2 employees — a Jack- and Jill- of all trades, but designers by training. We’d been married for almost 4 months when BlendCreations.com was officially launched.

Now: 2.5 employees — We’ve been joined by our pre-schooler junior VP. (Thanks to Kym Shumsky for the great photo).

Studio & Equipment

Then
: A 6′ x 4′ storage closet that held a scroll saw and a grinding wheel to hand-cut inlays.  (The space was so small, that it wasn’t possible to get a photo of the entire area).

Now
: A 12′ x 25′ dedicated studio space with fancy toys like a CNC-controlled router (shown, cutting some mother of pearl inlay) and a laser-engraver (shown with a brand-new laser-engraved custom Metal for Monsters pendant).

Website

Then:
A hand-coded HTML website with PayPal buttons. We originally launched the site with about 30 products and had dozens of sales by the time 2005 was over.

Now:
Well, if you’re reading this blog post on the website, then you see where we’re at now — a real shopping cart system that not only accepts PayPal, but Visa & Mastercard in both USD and CAD, thanks to the fine team of web developers at Aeolidia.  We now have over 200 products (not including all the color options available for each product).  Since 2005, we’ve had thousands of sales, thanks to our many awesome and loyal customers.

Branding:

Then: Our very first logo was created more for use in print advertising than on the website. When we first started, we weren’t able to brand our products or our packaging economically.

Now:
Our logo today is much more simplified and we now have the capability (thanks to a laser engraver) of branding most of our contemporary jewelry products as well as our packaging.

It’s been an amazing journey thus far, and we can only imagine what the next five years will bring.  We’ve been fortunate enough to have people who like our stuff (in a Facebook sense and in a ‘what cool products you have’ sense) that the job of running this company is more than a job; it’s a pleasure.

As thanks to all of our customers, we’ll be offering up some special birthday promotions.  Make sure you’re subscribed to our newsletter as they’ll be announced soon!
