Choosing the Right Jewelry Gift | Part 3: Choosing an anniversary gift

Tuesday, July 13th, 2010

This is the third post in a series on How to Choose the Right Jewelry Gift.
The first part of the series was about Narrowing down your choices
.
The second part of the series was about Choosing the right necklace length
.

Choosing a gift that’s more than just a trinket can be easy with a little thought and consideration. First off, what occasion are you buying for?  If it’s an anniversary, consider relating it to a ‘traditional’ wedding anniversary gift.  Here’s a few of our anniversary gift suggestions that relate to ‘Traditional’ anniversary gifts, but with our own modern twist.

First wedding anniversary gift: ‘Paper’

Our suggestion? A necklace inlaid with Japanese chiyogami paper, like the ones above with the Gerbera flower pattern.

Second anniversary is ‘Cotton’

Our suggestion? A pendant inlaid with Nepalese paper made from Lamali Lokta fibres. (Okay, so it’s not cotton, but it is a sustainable fibre made by co-ops in Nepal ;)

Third anniversary is ‘Crystal’

Our suggestion? ‘Solo’ Connection necklace with a single Swarovski crystal accent, or add a little more shine with three accents. Choose different colored accents — an easy choice is her birthstone month, the month you were married, or the birth months of your kids.  Or if you’re really not sure what to do, just choose the April crystal to simply signify the tradition of the anniversary.

Fourth anniversary is ‘Flowers’

Our suggestion? A foliage necklace, because you can never go wrong with the gift of flowers, and when they’re in necklace form, they’ll never wilt or die. One husband bought his wife a necklace with blue hydrangeas — their wedding flower — for extra thoughtfulness points.

Fifth anniversary is ‘Wood’

Our suggestion? Mod-rings engraved wood necklace for her and matching cufflinks for him.

Sixth anniversary is ‘Candy’

Our suggestion? Save the unnecessary calories and get her a candy-like sea fossil Torus necklace instead.

Seventh anniversary is ‘Copper’

Our suggestion? This eye-catching dyed copper abalone necklace.  For him, get the matching cufflinks.

Eighth and Ninth anniversary is ‘Pottery’

Our suggestion? These Torus necklaces made out of natural stone.  (While it’s not exactly pottery, it does have the texture of fine earthenware).

The traditional anniversary gift for the Tenth anniversary is ‘Tin’ or ‘Aluminium’ and while we don’t have any of that, we have many many suggestions for the traditional Eleventh anniversary gift of ‘Steel’every single one of our jewelry pieces is made from stainless steel! :)  But, if you’re looking for a specific suggestion, I’d say a solid stainless steel pendant personalized with your own artwork or a phrase to express your love:

Or how about some sleek and simple stainless steel cufflinks that you can embellish with a monogram?

No matter what gift you choose to give your partner on your anniversary, make sure you take a little time to make it a thoughtful gift and it will be sure to be appreciated!

Choosing the Right Jewelry Gift | Part 2: Choosing the right necklace length

Thursday, July 8th, 2010

This is the second post in a series on How to Choose the Right Jewelry Gift.
The first part of the series was about Narrowing down your choices
.

The most popular jewelry gifts from Blend Creations are usually in the form of a necklace or pendant.  And even if the gift giver has been given specific instructions on the exact necklace to purchase, they’re often stuck when choosing the length.  (So take that as a tip if you’re dropping hints about a gift: include the length of necklace you’d like!)

There are a few considerations when choosing the right necklace length (especially if it’s a gift for someone else).

  • The person’s build and height – Generally a more petite/thin person will need a shorter necklace than someone who is a larger build or taller.  This isn’t a hard and fast rule though, since you’re aiming to fit a necklace around a person’s neck and see where it sits on them. And — they may want the necklace to sit higher or lower depending on what they’re wearing (see next point). In the photos above, the female model wearing the necklace is of petite build, about 5’0″ tall  and is wearing a 16″ length leather cord.  The male model is of medium build, about 6’0″ tall and is wearing an 18″ length necklace. Both have the same pendant, but the larger person will need a longer necklace.
  • What kind of necklines and collar styles do they usually wear? - Wearing a V-neck top or more open neckline will suit a longer necklace than a small, round collar.  If they tend to wear higher collars and prefer to wear necklaces on top of their shirts, then it may be preferable to go longer.
  • The shape and size of the necklace or pendant – Naturally, a larger or longer pendant or necklace accent will hang down lower on the neckline than a smaller one. As such, you’ll need to factor this in when choosing the appropriate length and see whether this interferes with the type of neckline. (Compare the two sets of photos above where both models are each wearing the same necklace length, but with pendants of different sizes).

  • The tensility of the necklace, chain or cord – Our steel wires and our Connection necklaces keep their round shape when worn and will sit higher than our silver chains, rubber/leather cords tend to hang with the weight of the pendant.  The torus necklaces and round necklaces will keep a V-shape. In both images below and in all images, the necklace length is 16″ — but the effect is different depending on the type of necklace/chain/cord.

  • Compare with other necklaces they own – Again, a little bit of spying and comparison can help you decide the ideal length of their necklace gift.  If you’re absolutely stuck or unsure, ask the person who’ll be wearing it! Or if it’s you, take a length of string and see where the length you’re considering sits on your neckline.  Keep in mind the size of the pendant too — we put approximate sizes for all the pendants on each item page.

Our recommendation: Opt for an 18″ length as the ‘safe’ length if you’re really unsure, but choose 16″ if the intended wearer is female and of petite or thin in build. If the gift-recipient is male and/or larger, than opt for the 20″ length instead. No worries though because if the length is too short or too long, you can always exchange it for the right one too!

Stay tuned for the third part of our Choosing the Right Jewelry Gift series — Choosing a meaningful anniversary gift.

Choosing the Right Jewelry Gift | Part 1: Narrowing down your choices

Wednesday, July 7th, 2010

This is the first post in a series on How to choose the right jewelry gift.

One of the questions we get asked often is: “How do I choose the right jewelry gift for my wife? for my friend? for my daughter? etc. etc.”  Typically, the (often male, sometimes female) asker has been told by someone that they’d like anything at Blend Creations, and while that may be true, it makes it hard for the potential gift-giver to narrow the choices down.

The first thing to do is take a look at the product choices and choose between a ring, earrings or a necklace or pendant. Of the choices, a necklace or pendant may be your safest bet and here’s why:

Choosing rings:

The hardest jewelry piece to buy for someone else is probably a ring, because you’ll need to know their ring size.  If the gift is meant to be a surprise, then it will take some sneaky spy work to figure out the right ring size.  If the giftee already wears rings, then all you need to ‘borrow’ one of their rings and compare it to a print-out of our ring-sizing guide.  It’s a little harder if they don’t wear a ring already, since you’ll have to surreptitiously measure a finger and figure out the corresponding ring size. It may just be easiest to ask the person what their ring size is or make it part of their pre-gift-giving adventure.

Choosing earrings:

With earrings — make sure that the intended recipient wears pierced earrings! Our stainless steel earrings have a variety of inlays are a great gift especially if they’re paired with a matching necklace.  If you’ve got a particular pair of earrings in mind (like the washi earrings pictured), it’s a great idea to see if you can add a matching necklace or pendant to complete the gift, or save the necklace at a later date (for another occasion like an anniversary or Mother’s Day).

Hint: for each pair of earrings that we offer, we usually show similar items under the “You May Also Like” column on the right.

Keep in mind that some people consider earrings to be a very personal jewelry choice and may prefer certain types of earrings over others based on how their ears are pierced, how they wear their hair or if they wear other accessories (like necklaces or even glasses).

Choosing necklaces and pendants:

At Blend Creations, we differentiate between necklaces (top row) and pendants (bottom row) in that a pendant is a jewelry piece that does not include a chain or cord, and can actually be used on any chain or cord that can be strung through the 3.5mm diameter bale. Our necklaces differ in that the stainless steel pieces have a very small hole for the steel wire and are not removable.  In this sense, the pendants can offer some versatility in looks by changing the cord or chain on which it’s worn, while the necklaces are complete in their simplicity (and don’t require you to figure out which chain or cord you need!).

Either necklaces or pendants are great gift ideas because they make a nice visual impact on an outfit, but you do have to consider the length of the necklace, which brings us to our next point, which we will address in tomorrow’s post on Choosing the right necklace length.

Sneak peek | Modern rings with engraved wood inlay

Friday, May 21st, 2010

When our friend (and talented SEO writer) Kristina Mausser wanted a ring to go with her modern necklace with the Mod Clover engraved wood pattern, she was going to pair the necklace with one of our modern rings with bamboo inlay.

But, we thought it would a perfect time to try doing a modern ring with an engraved wood inlay to match the pattern of her necklace instead:

Once the dust has settled a bit from this major new website update we’ve just done, we’ll be adding engraved wood inlay rings to the store!

Store News & Giveaway | New website launched!

Tuesday, May 18th, 2010

It’s been many months in the making, but the new version of BlendCreations.com is now up and running. With this new design, we hope to make shopping for our contemporary jewelry designs that much easier!

Some of the new site features include:

1. Shopping by Occasion or by Recipient

We’ve had feedback that it would be helpful to shoppers looking for modern jewelry gift ideas to have curated collections of items that would make appropriate gifts.  So now, if you’re looking for recommendations for birthday gifts, gifts for him or gifts for your wedding party, we’ve selected some popular items that are sure to please!

2. We now accept credit card payments in both US and Canadian Dollars directly through our website

In the past, Canadians had to be e-invoiced to pay in CAD.  Canadians can now pay for orders directly through our secure website with Visa or Mastercard.  Just make sure that you’ve selected CAD as your currency before checking out!

3. Reorganized the site to show more contemporary jewelry items per page

You’ll notice that the new site also groups related items together. For example, all the Cherry blossoms necklaces can be ordered from the same page. We’ve also added a “You May Also Like” column to show you related items to every product.

4. Other contemporary jewelry gift-giving options

Our Sweet Surprises with our paper-inlay pendants proved to be popular enough that we’ve expanded the Sweet Surprises line-up to include Torus necklace surprises and Engraved Wood pendant surprises. We’ve also added the option to send gift certificates by mail in addition to sending them by e-mail. Each gift certificate is accompanied by a greeting card with your message.

5. You can leave a Customer Review

Our new website now has the option for you to let us know what you think of your modern necklace, pendant or other jewelry piece.  Just click on any item, and you’ll notice an area at the bottom of the page where you can rate it out of 5 stars and leave a little write-up.  Your feedback will then help prospective customers to decide on their next purchase!

And Finally… The May-June giveaway!

And here’s where this month’s giveaway comes in! Because of all the website updating, we’ve been tardy in announcing the May giveaway. For this month’s giveaway, we’re giving away a Sweet Surprise of the winner’s choice.

To enter this month’s giveaway, we’d like you to test-drive our Customer Review feature and leave us a product review for an item you own or an item you covet. You’ll get one entry per product review and you can submit a maximum of five reviews per person.

We’ll draw from all the customer reviews we receive from now until June 30, 2010 at noon EDT. Good luck!
