If you’ve ever wanted to know just a little more about us, Jen Wallace over at IndieFixx interviewed us yesterday and we’re honoured to be part of her Wednesday Indie Artist Fixx feature. The interview has a never-before-seen photo of our CNC router in action, cutting a piece of mother of pearl inlay for one of our rings. I’m sure that’s enough to drive you to go read the interview, right?

At Blend Creations, we always appreciate getting recognized as “indie designers”. If you’re wondering what exactly it means to be an “indie designer”, Tara Gentile of ScoutieGirl has one of the most accurate definitions we’ve seen so far:
These are people who take great care & often make equally great sacrifices to be original and genuine in their work, while taking on the learning curve of MGMT 101 and MKTG 101. Not to mention, they’re learning code languages and graphic design out the wazoo to keep costs down on web management, PR and collateral materials. A lot of hats to wear, and my hat goes off to all of them for learning to juggle!
Luckily for us, we’re designers by training (V is an industrial designer and E a graphic designer) so we’ve at least come to the “indie designer” label with some prior experience. Even if we become a recognized brand world-wide (we can dream!), being “indie” will still be a label that we’ll be proud to bear.
Beth of IndieNorth featured four of our contemporary jewelry designs:
· “Red tulips” washi pendant. We’ve also got a wide-range of other washi patterns available, and you can get round washi necklaces as well as long and small square pendants.
· White mother of pearl stainless steel necklace (available in 16″ – 20″ lengths). We call this particular necklace our “modern classic” because it goes so well with everything from a t-shirt and jeans, to a night-on-the-town dress.
If you’re looking for some great modern jewelry gift ideas, shown are our:
· Solid stainless steel Metal for Monsters pendant featuring the artwork, “Bunny Skull” by Brian Taylor ($16 from the purchase of any of our Metal for Monsters pendants goes to support the international children’s charity, UNICEF). Makes an excellent gift for guys who love graphic illustration.
· Round “red streak” marbled paper stainless steel necklace available in 16″-20″ lengths – a good gift idea for your best friend.
· “Flower lace” earrings in orange-red wood; these earrings match our “flower lace” necklace. Together, the set makes a lovely gift for the woman in your life who appreciates contemporary and simple looking jewelry that goes with everything!
Around here, we consider blog reading as “market research” — isn’t it nice when surfing is actually considered ‘work’?
One of our favourite blogs is Young House Love written by Sherry & John Petersik who write about their DIY and interior design adventures as they fix up their 50s-era bungalow. One of the reasons we’ve been reading with such zest is because we recently moved into a 50s-era bungalow ourselves and we’ve relied on some of John and Sherry’s how-to posts about painting fireplaces and basement floors. Fun!
We love their blog so much, that we became one of their sponsors — we love that they feature some really cohesive interior designs and how they can do a range of interior design styles: from clean and modern, to comfy and beachy; all without breaking the bank.
Sherry & John posted a ‘thanks’ post to all their sponsors where they said this about us:
We couldn’t be more thrilled to be a sponsor of their blog!
We’ve recently collaborated with both Cool Mom Picks and Splendicity and we’ve given away a number of our modern ‘Torus’ necklaces. Congrats goes out to Ariel J., Alice H., and Dawn I. who won the Cool Mom Picks contest and to Soraya who won the Splendicity draw.
If you didn’t win, you can take advantage of the coupon codes that both blogs have published (hint: follow the blog links and read the entry). Or if you’d like more chances to win some of our lovely modern jewelry pieces, make sure to fan us on Facebook, follow us on Twitter or join our newsletter.
So far, we’ll be giving away another Torus necklace to a Facebook fan on October 28th and a $100 gift certificate for Blend Creations to a lucky newsletter subscriber. And because we like to have fun with our Facebook fans, sometimes we mix things up – last Friday, there was a spontaneous giveaway of some of our stationery for the first ten people who would tell us what they love about fall. Facebook fans can also post photos of themselves wearing their Blend Creations necklaces (or earrings or rings anyone?) – as thanks, we’ll message you with a $5 gift certificate code.
It’s all part of business as we get into the swing of ‘social networking’ ;) More than anything, it’s fun to interact and sometimes even ‘see’ our customers.
…these gorgeous, spinning, stainless steel necklaces from CMP favorite Blend Creations are the perfect mix of modern, elegant, and versatile.
We got a nice little surprise yesterday. It turns out Blend Creations was featured in the yesterday’s Ottawa Citizen. We were mentioned in “The Ottawa 100-mile gift guide“, under the heading “For the glitterati“.
Basically, the gift guide promotes the idea of “local shopping for global change” — shopping locally as a small way of reducing your carbon footprint on the planet. Now, I realize that most of our customers are not actually local, and we really, really appreciate each and every customer who has purchased from us, and enjoyed our products. It is nice to get some local recognition though :)
So, if you’re from Ottawa and found us through the Citizen, “hi!”.
If you’re not from Ottawa and reading this, why not try “local shopping for global change” in your area — support your local artists and independant, small businesses. (That being said, I think we’ll have to get a “Rim Roller” the next time we’re at Lee Valley…).
(Note: I’m not sure how long the Citizen actually keeps stories active in their online archive).
It’s been a pretty good week so far, for only being Tuesday! Yesterday we were sitting at #1 for the most popular bookmark on Stylehive, (I believe we’ve currently been bumped to #2) and the StylehiveBlog did a nice post about us too.
Toot. Toot. That’s me tooting our own horn. I’m done now ;)
Stylehive is a social bookmarking site that lets you bookmark all things fashion, style and product related. It’s a good way to find some neat things you might not have otherwise found.
So, in case you missed out, you can still take advantage of the offer by first joining the newsletter and then letting us know you did so. We’ll forward you the latest issue and then you too will know what the discount code is. :)
