Worldly disc bottle opener pendant

To most people, this stainless steel disc will simply be an abstract-patterned pendant, but the opening of the disc is actually a functioning bottle-opener, and the pattern is actually a map in homage to the birthplace of one of fifteen well-loved brews. You can open your beer, and look good doing it!

A great gift for beer snobs ;)

Sneak peek | More geekery: #hashtag pendants

Tuesday, October 11th, 2011

We’ve been tossing around ideas for more products that fall in line with our geek chic offerings and my friend and social media strategist Lara Wellman suggested doing a ‘hashtag’ necklace.

In case you’re wondering what a hashtag is, (it took many moons of being on Twitter before I realized what one was), the Twitter Fan Wiki says:

“Hashtags are a community-driven convention for adding additional context and metadata to your tweets. They’re like tags on Flickr, only added inline to your post. You create a hashtag simply by prefixing a word with a hash symbol: #hashtag.”

In any case, we sketched out some ideas, and weren’t really happy with any of them until we made this plastic prototype:

We’ve received enough feedback via Twitter that we’ll add it to our line-up within the next few months!

To enter this month’s giveaway, simply tell us:

1) Your name
2) If you’d keep this beauty for yourself or give it to someone else (if so, who?)
3) What’s your favorite summer-time place, beverage and activity? :)

Please, only one entry per person. We will draw randomly from all the comments received on Monday August 1st at noon EDT, but if the comment doesn’t have all the above answered, we will re-draw.  Good luck!

And to wrap things up from our June giveaway for a Honeycomb wrench pendant, we randomly drew a number between 1 and 64 and got lucky number 18! Congratulations to Kylie who left us the 18th comment:

Sneak peek | Work in progress: Labyrinth pendant

Wednesday, June 15th, 2011

When we design new products, they always start with a sketch, then a production drawing and often a plastic prototype to get a good sense of what the piece will feel like physically.

We’re currently working on a Labyrinth pendant which would include a little maze marker that you can actually move. (Of course, the final product would be made of stainless steel and not plastic),

While the prototype isn’t nearly as robust as the final product would be, it’s already a lot of fun to play with!

Shop news | Written in the stars: new zodiac pendants

Wednesday, April 6th, 2011

We’ve just added a couple of new high-polished stainless steel tab pendants — they join our QR barcode pendant and our Twitter handle pendant.

Both new pendants are stellar (yes, pun intended!) as they are zodiac pendants – one for traditional astrology, and the other one based on the Chinese Zodiac.

Mention & Giveaway | A Peek Inside the Fishbowl

Friday, December 4th, 2009

A peek inside the fishbowl

Ottawa blogger, writer/photographer (triple threat anyone?), Andrea Tomkins writes the blog A peek inside the fishbowl, about her life here in our fabulous hometown of Ottawa, ON.  I was introduced to her by way of a mutual friend, and when I read her bio, I realized she was one of the contributors to our local ‘eating bible’, Cheap Eats Ottawa.

In any case, we’ve agreed to do a $100 gift certificate giveaway through her blog, so go enter — it’s open until Thursday December 10th.

Mentions | Indie North calls us “Contemporary Beauty”

Saturday, November 14th, 2009

At Blend Creations, we always appreciate getting recognized as “indie designers”.  If you’re wondering what exactly it means to be an “indie designer”, Tara Gentile of ScoutieGirl has one of the most accurate definitions we’ve seen so far:

These are people who take great care & often make equally great sacrifices to be original and genuine in their work, while taking on the learning curve of MGMT 101 and MKTG 101. Not to mention, they’re learning code languages and graphic design out the wazoo to keep costs down on web management, PR and collateral materials. A lot of hats to wear, and my hat goes off to all of them for learning to juggle!

Luckily for us, we’re designers  by training (V is an industrial designer and E a graphic designer) so we’ve at least come to the “indie designer” label with some prior experience.  Even if we become a recognized brand world-wide (we can dream!), being “indie” will still be a label that we’ll be proud to bear.

That’s part of the reason that it’s nice to be recognized in our home country by IndieNorth – a Canadian Indie Business Collective as “Contemporary Beauty“:

Indie North features Blend Creations modern jewelry

Beth of IndieNorth featured four of our contemporary jewelry designs:

· White cloisonné torus stainless steel necklace (available in 16″ – 20″ lengths).  Our cloisonné necklaces are available in five other colours as well.

· “Red tulips” washi pendant.  We’ve also got a wide-range of other washi patterns available, and you can get round washi necklaces as well as long and small square pendants.

· “Flower lace” wood and stainless steel earrings.  Our most popular earrings!  And they were recently featured on Purple Pink and Orange (another indie design-centric blog).

· White mother of pearl stainless steel necklace (available in 16″ – 20″ lengths).  We call this particular necklace our “modern classic” because it goes so well with everything from a t-shirt and jeans, to a night-on-the-town dress.

Purple Pink and Orange, a great blog that supports indie designers like Blend Creations, did this little feature of a few of our modern jewelry pieces today:

If you’re looking for some great modern jewelry gift ideas, shown are our:

· Round “red streak” marbled paper stainless steel necklace available in 16″-20″ lengths – a good gift idea for your best friend.

· “Flower lace” earrings in orange-red wood; these earrings match our “flower lace” necklace.  Together, the set makes a lovely gift for the woman in your life who appreciates contemporary and simple looking jewelry that goes with everything!
